Internship Title: Mobile Unit Engineer Apprentice

Internship Description:

The purpose of this position is to develop engineering and broadcast equipment maintenance skills through 4 phases, ultimately resulting in a mobile unit engineer position.

Developmental Phases:

PHASE I (approximately 1 month)
Work with Company Field Shop
Load and offload equipment from mobile units.
Compile load lists for mobile units.
Bar code equipment properly.
Scan equipment into equipment database.
Copper cable fabrication

PHASE II (approximately 6 months)
Work with Company Integration
Mobile Unit construction.
Cutting cables and terminating ends.
Lacing cables in mobile unit racks.
Testing cables.
Install and fax out equipment.
Learn truck schematics and create truck elevation drawings.
Participate in final mobile unit fax out before 1st event.

PHASE III (approximately 6 months)
Work with Company Maintenance Department
Daily reporting to Chief Engineer (Jeff Joslin).
Equipment quality control and check out.
Check and repair auxiliary equipment as it passes through field shop (including intercom belt packs, monitors, microphones, speaker stations, etc.)
Work side by side with Chief Engineer and Maintenance Engineers on special projects, different pieces of equipment, and software upgrades.
Install and fax out broadcast gear in mobile units (including cameras and vtrs).
Work on mobile units as an extra engineer when opportunity arises.

PHASE IV (approximately 3 to 6 months)
Work on a specified mobile unit as a 3rd Engineer
Set up mobile unit(s).
On site preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of television equipment and systems.
Work with Company engineers, drivers and crew members.
Strike and tear down mobile unit(s).

Evaluations:
Evaluation of the apprentice will be continuous throughout the program phases.

Qualifications:
Outstanding performance in either a Broadcast Communications or Engineering School.
Electronics training preferred.
Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 100 lbs.
Ability to work on projects individually and in a team oriented environment.
Must be able to work on multiple projects with tight deadlines.
Travel will be required.

Internship Description:

This is an unpaid internship, approximately 8 hours per week with a minimum time commitment of 3 months. Our office hours are Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm.

Educational Benefits:

Intern will learn basic broadcast engineering operation of the Station. Intern will be given hands-on experience in broadcast operations including: master control, satellite record, program prep, camera shade. Student will get guidance and experience in assisting viewers with reception of the DTV signal. Student may assist the Transmitter Engineer with field and in-home reception testing and data collection. Student will become familiar with the basics of the television transmitter system.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Assist viewers over the phone and via email to solve DTV reception problems
2. Track reception problems and resolutions in Microsoft SharePoint list
3. Recommend specific viewers for field assistance
4. Assist Transmitter Engineer with performing in-home reception tests and resolve or make recommendations to the viewer
5. Assist with additional activities as required

Minimum Qualifications:

1. High School diploma or GED required
2. Applicants must be currently enrolled in an educational degree program
3. Communications or TV Broadcast coursework preferred
4. Thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel required
5. Excellent writing and verbal communication skills required
6. Attention to detail and good organization skills required
7. Ability to work unsupervised
8. Familiarity with spectrum analyzer preferred
9. Interest in Operations, public television and the media industry as a whole preferred
